Fiat Nationals at Winton - 22nd Jan 2012
Most of us had not been to Winton for a while, and we had to learn it again - these smooth flowing circuits are so different from our more familiar Mallala. Dave Bicknell succumbed to mechanical gremlins and didn't get to start at the sprint, although he did us proud in the Saturday motorkhana. The Spiteri brothers Jason and Andrew renewed their battle after a long absence, with Jason coming out on top this time with a fantastic 11th outright! The Coles brothers (OK, I'm his dad - Ed) had the by now predictable outcome, with Andrew pipping Mike by a second or so.

MSCA Supersprint Round 5 - 23rd October 2011
Round 5 was a non-scoring round, with two timed rounds in the morning, and the afternoon used for two-up drives, driver and car swapping, and a parade session. It was a good chance to see how others (and their cars) drive, and compare notes about all aspects of sprinting. Brian Alexander had the 125 percolating well, and as a bonus, your editor beat son Andrew for the first time in about, oh, a hundred sprints!

MSCA Supersprint Round 4 - 18th September 2011
If last round was perfect weather, this was more than perfect - bright, sunny, and warm with a gentle breeze.
Only one Fiat ran on the day, Brian Alexander in the 125 again, and also Mike Coles in the Alfa Sprint. The track condition was ideal, the cars felt great, but for some reason we were both marginally slower than last round!

MSCA Supersprint Round 3 - 14th August 2011
The MSCA organised perfect weather for round 3 - bright, sunny and cool, with little wind, perfect for sprinting.
Brian Alexander had the 125 performing well as usual, and web editor Mike Coles was this time solo in the Alfa, with son Andrew doing a stint in the 124 CC Coupe of Guy Standen, double entered.
What this meant for me was that for the first time in a long time, nobody beat me in my own car! Andrew felt his way in the CC, his first serious tilt at competitive driving whilst being pushed by the rear wheels rather than pulled by the front, and got down to a very creditable time, whilst remaining quite tidy. But Guy was fastest, which is why he is driving in the Adelaide Targa, and Andrew is co-driver.
And the Jaguar that kept spinning in front of us last round managed a vertical spin this time - yes, it rolled, in practice! Thankfully with no injuries.

MSCA Supersprint Round 2 - 3rd July 2011
The long layoff seems to have made us all forget how to do it, as the times were mostly worse than what we expected. The weather was better than it might have been, with no rain, but the track was slippery from the Saturday drifters dragging all the environment onto the black bits, and the wind also must have been a factor.
But if you count the FUN factor - we all had a great time, so as usual it was well worthwhile. Avoiding multiple spinning Jaguars became an art form to be perfected!

MSCA Supersprint Round 1 - 27th March 2011
Brian Alexander brought out his Fiat 125 and Guy Standen, after a year long layoff, returned to the fray and was right on the mark as if he hadn't been away at all. Andrew and Mike Coles in the Alfa as usual, and in the absence of Michael Myllinen (overseas), dad Peter gave the BMW a run very creditably.

MSCA Supersprint Round 4 - 24th October 2010
The usual stalwarts - Brian Alexander (Fiat 125) and Warren Brine (124BC Coupe), along with the Coles's in the Alfa and Michael Myllinen in the ever improving BMW. All ran well for most of the day, but unfortunately the Brine BC succumbed to what looks like a serious engine problem toward the end of the day.

MSCA Supersprint Round 2 - 4th July 2010
In stark contrast to the March sprint, round 2 gave us perfect weather, and six of our members made the best of it. Alas not many Fiats, but Brian Alexander had the 125 buzzing again, and Warren Brine was circulating well in the 124 BC coupe.

MSCA Supersprint Round 1 - 28th March 2010
Who would have thought that the first Supersprint of the year would be wet, wet, wet? Well, it was, and even although there were no records set, the action on the track was full speed, with our light nimble cars climbing dramatically up the leader board - check out Andrew Coles 9th outright on the day!
And with eight FLCCSA members competing (albeit only three in Fiats), could we be seeing the beginning of a resurgence? The results are posted [here].

Fiat Nationals 15th-17th January 2010
The Fiat Nationals has three competitions - the most prestigious being the Fiat of Italy Cup awarded for motorkhana, a Show and Shine (this year re-named the ShowER and Shine), and a speed event (supersprint at Wakefield Park circuit).
In addition, there is a major award (the Richard Unkles Trophy) for the most successful individual competitor in the same vehicle, in all events.
We seemed to be having only modest success, until Bryce Alexander popped up and won the Fiat Nationals Champion!

MSCA Supersprint Round 4 - 25th October 2009
Only two Fiats competed at this round - Guy Standen showing good pace in the 124CC, and Russell Frick in the quick but fragile Turbo X1/9, which unfortunately didn't get past first practice (where are you Russell?).
Also competing were Peter Emes in the (rapid) Renault Clio Sport, and the Coles's in the Alfa. Results posted [here].

MSCA Supersprint Round 3 - 16th August 2009
We always enjoy our supersprinting, but the August sprint we enjoyed less than most - that infernal Mallala wind straight in the face up the main straight put paid to good times being achieved by most of us.
The Standen and Brine 124 Coupes were there as usual, as well as the Coles Alfa and Peter Emes' MX5. All seemed to struggle with the conditions except the Brines who seemingly ignored the wind and returned times almost equal to their personal best! The results are posted [here].

MSCA Supersprint Round 2 - 5th July 2009
A torrential downpour at Mallala, rather than dampening the enthusiasm, created perfect conditions for the sprinters to practice the fine art of car control! But it didn't come until after practice and round 1, so some very good times were posted still.
Guy Standen and Warren Brine represented the marque in their Coupes (124 CC and BC respectively), with the Coles Alfa (Andrew and Mike driving), and Peter Emes' MX5 at least flying the FLCCSA membership flag.
All cars performed admirably, as did the drivers in the slippery conditions, although not without some, er, moments to remember. The results are posted [here].

MSCA Supersprint Round 1 - 1st March 2009
A beautiful day at Mallala proved even better than we thought - the track was in great condition, and resulted in many sprinters posting fastest times.
Two 124 coupes represented the Fiat marque, Guy Standen in his CC and Warren and Adrian Brine shared the BC again.
Members in other cars were Mike and Andrew Coles in the Alfa Sprint, Peter and Lachlan Emes in their MX5, and Peter Myllynen in the BMW E30 323I.
All finished the day with beaming smiles, and results are posted [here].

Fiat Nationals Goulburn - January 16th 2009
The 2009 Fiat Nationals were held at Goulburn NSW for the first time, and the beautiful Wakefield Park Circuit was the venue for the Supersprint.
It was only a small contingent from SA, which got smaller after first practice when David Bicknell had to retire the X1/9. It had done the motorkhana and presentazione, so it had a pretty full weekend.
Russell Frick was quick as always in the Turbo X1/9, but it too threw a couple of tantrums, which couldn't have helped Russell to keep focussed on driving it. Still, 4th fastest on the day despite the woes isn't too shabby!.
It was up to the Coles' Alfa to uphold the honour, even if it is the wrong marque. I know I'm biased, but this car once again drove 1,200 Km to an event, got thrown around a racetrack all day by two maniacs, set creditable times, then drove back 1,200 Km through 40deg heat, and didn't miss a beat for the whole weekend!

MSCA Supersprint Round 4 - 26th October 2008
We haven't had great numbers this year, but the quality has been good - again two 124 Coupes and a subsidiary brand represented the club.
The Brine's 124 BC, despite a couple of (thankfully) minor problems, carried both drivers to personal bests - Warren achieved a small improvement, but he must be feeling threatened by son Adrian's progress. (Don't worry Warren - it will happen, and you'll eventually learn to accept it. I know.)
Guy Standen returned after a bit of a break, quickly settling into fast, consistent and reliable laptimes in the CC.
Andrew Coles in the Alfa again trumped Mike, but must have been trying a bit, as he was sighted at one stage travelling between turns one and two at about 120 Km/h backwards! Mike's current excuse was that he was dicing all day with a pesky Alfasud (AROCAs Ian Patrick), which was great fun but didn't produce any great times.
Oh, and next time you buy tires for the family hack pause for a moment to think about the poor sprinters in the club (and maybe even consider a small donation!) - we came home in the Alfa with our expensive R tyres in tatters after one season, about 1,500Km.

MSCA Twilight Supersprint - 13th September 2008
Due to a continuing decline in entries, this will probably be the last of the Twilight Supersprints, which is a pity - there have been some good times had over the years.
The Brine's 124 BC flew the flag, and despite a horror run of luck, both Warren and Adrian left smiling. Would you believe, the 124 suffered a broken windscreen in the first practice session! Removal of the remains, and the rear window glass, enabled them to continue, only to be hit with a self-unscrewed oil filter later in the day, which ended their outing.
The perennial Alfa of the Coles' also did double duty on the day.
A glorious day for the last Sprint of the year - FLCCSA represented by Warren and Adrian Brine in the 124 BC, and Guy Standen in his 124 CC.

MSCA Supersprint Round 3 - 17th August 2008
At last, some Fiats competing at Mallala!
The Brine's 124 Sport piloted by Warren and son Adrian made a welcome appearance and both continue to improve their times.
Guy Standen made a comeback in the CC with rebuilt engine and bigger brakes, and shone until a diff failure sidelined him.
The Coles's Alfa Sprint also appeared, Andrew driving it like it was stolen to beat Mike by an even greater margin, both posting PBs!

MSCA Supersprint Round 2 - 13th April 2008
Only two members competed in Round 2, in one car, and that wasn't a Fiat!

MSCA Supersprint Round 1 - 2nd March 2008
In the best turnout from our club for some time, eight entrants competed in Round One. Only half of them in Fiats, though, so get those sprinting cars back on the track!
The non competitors group arrived during the morning after a great drive in the hills, and a tasty BBQ was cooked by Bruce Eckersley, in the comfort of Russell Frick's marquee. Thanks to both, and to Phil Holland for organising the event.

Fiat Al Monte - 18th-21st January 2008
South Australia again punched above it's weight at the national gathering of Fiat clubs - Fiat Al Monte at Bathurst NSW.
We were represented competitively by Peter Taylor, Dave Bicknell, Russell Frick, Brian Alexander, Andrew Coles and Mike Coles, and backed up socially by Russell's new bride Mandy, and Tristan, as well as President Alan Pickering and regular Al Monte traveller Reidar Pedersen.
Top result individually was Andrew Coles, who with good performances in all disciplines, came away as the 2008 Fiat Al Monte Champion.
Most of our drivers also picked up class wins and places - more detail when full results arrive.
Your website editor (Andrew's Dad) beat Andrew in the hillclimb - first time on the bitumen for a couple of years now. Check out the gallery to see how hard you have to try to do this!
All cars performed faultlessly, both on the trip over and back, and in the competition.

MSCA Twilight Supersprint - 22nd September 2007
Jason Spiteri put the 124 into 1m 24's, which is quite an achievement for both the car and the driver, and again proved to be the fastest Fiat by quite a margin.
New member from Whyalla Warren Brine competed in his 124BC, the ex-Bruce Eckersley car. Warren had never driven the car, and had never driven on a race circuit, yet steadily improved his lap times all day. By the grin on his face, I reckon he may have been enjoying himself a bit, too!
The Coleses (Andrew and Mike) again double entered the Alfa Sprint, both doing PB's, but Mike still in search of that elusive sub 1m 30s lap.
Wayne Foster hasn't been seen sprinting in the orange Falcon for a while, but doesn't seem to have slowed at all. It was noted (by someone who maybe should direct their mental energy to more more worthwhile pursuits) that the big Ford had more engine capacity than the sum of the other three FLCCSA cars competing!
The team relay sprint only had three teams enter, and FLCCSA came second. We were beaten by the Nissan Datsun mob using turbocharged monsters, so were hardly disgraced. The third team was a group of clubmans (clubmen?), so beating them in our modest sedans was no easy feat.

MSCA Supersprint Round 4 - 26th August 2007
Jason Spiteri won the FFOTD (Fastest Fiat of the Day), despite only completing one round before succumbing to mechanical gremlins. The 124 sedan had not had an outing here for some years, so we look forward to Jason bringing it out again after some refurbishment.
Brian Alexander punted the beautifully presented, ever reliable and always fast 125 in his usual impeccable style, again with excellent results.
With the X1/9 still in extended layoff, Mike and Andrew Coles ran the Alfa Sprint again, this time with new, proper track tires. And what a difference, with Andrew consistently under 1m 30s, and Mike almost in the twenties with him! We never thought this car was capable of sub thirties, and it now is with at least one of it's drivers; the other is trying desperately to catch up!

MSCA Supersprint Round 3 - 24th June 2007
Brian Alexander was the sole Fiat at the Supersprint Round 3.
Mike and Andrew Coles also competed, although in the Alfa again (the X1/9 is in hospital getting some surgery).
Several members were seen at the event, though, including Bruce Eckersley, Drew Milne and Nigel and Simon Griffin; (tell me if I've left you out).

MSCA Supersprint Round 2 - 6th May 2007
Round 2 of the MSCA Supersprint series was held in beautiful weather at Mallala on Sunday 6th May.
FLCCSA was represented by Andrew and Mike Coles (Andrew in the X1/9, and me in the trusty Alfa), Guy Standen again in his 124CC Coupe, and Tony Martini first time out in his lovely 124AC Coupe. Tony unfortunately was forced to retire with an engine problem, but was looking very tidy up until then; let's hope we see him out there again soon.
Andrew and Guy both circulated tidily and reliably, and set creditable lap times.
Yours truly found over two seconds by fitting a smaller diameter front sway bar!
A demonstration of a simple change bringing about a dramatic improvement, both in the fun factor and the lap times.

MSCA Supersprint Round 1 - 25th Mar 2007
Regulars Bruce Eckersley, Brian Alexander and Andrew Coles competed, Andrew for the first time in his X1/9 rather than the Alfa.
New member Guy Standen in his 124CC stayed on from the previous day's twilight race meeting (now that's keen!), and was getting pretty well to grips with the Mallala layout when he unfortunately succumbed to gearbox problems.
Bryce Alexander took some great shots, a small selection of which can be seen in the gallery.

Fiat Al Monte 2007
Who would believe that after last year's third place in the Fiat of Italy Cup, we would take the next step this year? Well, South Australia came second in the national motorkhana competition!
We were represented at the national meeting by Peter Taylor, Dave Bicknell, Brian Alexander, Andrew Coles, Mike Coles, Phil Manning, and the Spiteri team - Jason and Dannielle, brother Andrew, and dad Vic.
Whilst there were some great individual performances, our success came from the team's consistency and reliability. All cars performed faultlessly, both on the trip over and back, and in the competition.
The trip home was a bit cooler than last year, and much more comfortable.

MSCA Supersprint Round 4 - 22nd Oct 2006
Once again, not much of a turnout of Fiats - Brian Alexander flying the flag solo, and the Coles's in the Alfa Sprint.

MSCA Twilight Supersprint - 30th Sep 2006
Sadly, there were no Fiats at the twilight supersprint (let's not allow this to ever happen again!)
The club was represented by a subsidiary brand though - the Coles's in the Alfa Sprint. Andrew still in front of Mike, but the usual half second gap now reduced to four one-hundredths of a second!

MSCA Supersprint Round 3 - 27 Aug 2006
It was a long time between sprints, but well worth the wait!
Brian and Bryce Alexander again in the 125, and Bruce Eckersley back behind the wheel of his 124 BC, and loving it!
The Coles Alfa was again out there, again Andrew was fastest, although Mike complains that he didn't get a decent run, with each round resulting in fun but timewasting dicing .

MSCA Supersprint Round 2 - 9 Apr 2006
Once again, not a big representation from our club, but a beautiful day this time, and a great time was had by all. Brian and Bryce Alexander in the immaculate 125, and Peter Taylor driving Bruce Eckersley's 124BC (and giving Bruce a hard target for next time!) Bruce watched from a flag point - thanks for your help, Bruce.
Andrew and Mike Coles did battle again in the little Alfa, Andrew coming out on top again; ballast has been talked of for the next event.
Most regulars don't know Wayne Foster, and although he drives a Ford he is a member of our club. His philosophy ("there's no substitute for cubic inches")is one we don't all subscribe to - but it has got him into the twenties for the first time (1:29.93)- well done, Wayne.

MSCA Supersprint Round 1 - 5th Mar 2006
Not a big representation from FLCCSA, hot and dry at Mallala, but battle was done, and the victors and vanquished were sorted out! The gallery has some great photos, and results can be viewed [here] .

Fiat Al Monte 2006
Once again, an intrepid band of travellers made the pilgrimage to Bathurst, the holy grail of motorsport, for Fiat Al Monte. Peter Taylor, David Bicknell, Brian and Bryce Alexander, Andrew and Mike Coles and Reidar Pedersen all made the trip by road, and Russell Frick flew himself and trucked his car (his hillclimb performance suggests this may be a good option!).
Not only was a great time had by all (Fiat Al Monte weekend is very social), but everyone put in a great performance.
The SA team came in a creditable third in the Fiat of Italy Cup for motorkhana behind VIC and NSW, and there were also some great individual performances. Russell in the turbo X1-9 "Pocket Rocket" surprised a few with third outright fastest on the Mount, against some very sophisticated race cars. All cars performed faultlessly, both on the trip over and back, and in the competition.
The trip home was a bit sobering - the cars driving through 47deg at Hay on the way back, albeit at slightly reduced pace.

ABOUT SUPER SPRINTING

Supersprinting at Mallala Raceway (preferably in your Fiat or Lancia) is an excellent way to become involved in motor sport at an entry level. Only 45 minutes from Adelaide, Mallala is a demanding but safe circuit, and the perfect place for you to test your driving skills and your car's potential against others, in a friendly competitive atmosphere.
A supersprint consists of sessions of timed laps around the circuit with up to 12 cars on track. It's a bit like race qualifying - track position is not important, rather the fastest lap you can achieve. This ensures that, although you are driving at racing speeds, sprinting is safer than racing. Incidents do happen, but normally result in only dented egos - unlike racing, it is rare for vehicle damage to occur.
Up to 100 classic, sports and racing cars can be seen at a typical MSCA meeting, so come pit yourself against an old Datsun, a turbo Fiat, a bunch of WRX's, a race ready Alfa Romeo or a pack of screaming MG's. Trophies for various classes are awarded by the MSCA at their annual Trophy picnic.

The participating car will be checked by scrutineers, including: ...roadworthy tyres
